🌿 Week 58
Speaking Truth In Love
Truth • Love • Courage • Grace
GOVERNING QUESTION
Can I remain truthful without leaving love?
Weekly Formation Focus
In Week 57, we learned to carry the peace of Christ into our relationships.
But peace is not silence.
There are times when a peaceful, Christ-centred person must still speak clearly.
We may need to express what we think.
Clarify what we meant.
Say how something affected us.
Acknowledge that we disagree.
Correct a misunderstanding about our own words or intentions.
Or simply stop pretending that everything is fine when something true needs to be communicated.
Week 58 is not about correcting another person. That comes later.
This week is about learning to communicate truthfully without leaving love.
Some people avoid truth because they fear another person’s response.
Others speak truth, but allow frustration, pride, or anger to shape the way it comes out.
Christ forms something different.
Truth does not have to disappear in order for love to remain, and love does not require us to hide what is true.
🌱 DAY 267 — HOLD TRUTH AND LOVE TOGETHER
Scripture — Ephesians 4:15
“…speaking the truth in love…”
Scripture does not separate truth from love.
It joins them.
Truth without love can become harsh.
Love without truth can become avoidance.
Sometimes we call silence “keeping the peace” when we are actually afraid to speak honestly.
At other times we say, “I am just telling the truth,” while our words are carrying frustration, contempt, or anger.
The life of Christ forms us to hold both together.
We can be honest and still remain loving.
Today’s Practice
Think about one situation where something true needs to be communicated.
Ask:
“What would it look like to speak the truth here without leaving love?”
Examples to help you understand how you can write your response. Please answer based on your experience.
- Speaking the truth without leaving love would mean telling the person that I disagree without treating their opinion as foolish.
- Speaking the truth without leaving love would mean explaining that something they said hurt me without attacking their character.
- Speaking the truth without leaving love would mean admitting that I gave the impression I agreed when I actually did not.
- Speaking the truth without leaving love would mean correcting a misunderstanding about what I meant without becoming defensive.
- Speaking the truth without leaving love would mean being honest about how I experienced the situation while still respecting the person.
Formation Prayer
Holy Spirit, teach me to remain committed to both truth and love. Let neither fear nor frustration govern my words. Amen.
🌱 DAY 268 — SPEAK FOR A GODLY PURPOSE
Scripture — Ephesians 4:29
“Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up…”
Scripture teaches us that our words should serve a godly purpose.
So before speaking, we should ask:
“What should my words accomplish here?”
Am I trying to bring clarity?
Understanding?
Honesty?
Healing?
A better conversation?
Or am I simply trying to release frustration?
Win?
Embarrass?
Make the person feel what I felt?
Words can be factually true and still serve the wrong purpose.
Spirit-led speech is not only concerned with accuracy.
It is also concerned with whether what we say contributes something constructive.
Today’s Practice
Before one important conversation, ask:
“What should my words accomplish in this situation?”
Examples to help you understand how you can write your response. Please answer based on your experience.
- My words should bring clarity because the person has misunderstood what I meant.
- My words should help the person understand how the situation affected me without making them feel attacked.
- My words should correct an inaccurate assumption about my position.
- My words should help us understand one another better instead of simply proving that I am right.
- My words should communicate honestly what I experienced so that confusion does not continue.
Formation Prayer
Holy Spirit, govern the purpose of my words. Let what I say serve truth, understanding, grace, and what is good. Amen.
🌱 DAY 269 — DO NOT LET FEAR SILENCE TRUTH
Scripture — Proverbs 29:25
“The fear of man lays a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord is safe.”
Fear can silence truth.
We may know what needs to be said, but worry about how the person will respond.
Will they be offended?
Will they misunderstand?
Will they become angry?
Will they withdraw?
Will they think differently about us?
When fear governs us, we may agree outwardly while disagreeing inwardly.
We may avoid the conversation.
Hint instead of speaking clearly.
Or say nothing and quietly carry resentment.
But another person’s possible response must not become the authority over whether we communicate truthfully.
Today’s Practice
Ask:
“What truth am I avoiding because I am afraid of the person’s response?”
Examples to help you understand how you can write your response. Please answer based on your experience.
- The truth I am avoiding is that I do not agree with the decision, even though I can explain my view respectfully.
- The truth I am avoiding is that something they said affected me more deeply than I admitted.
- The truth I am avoiding is that I misunderstood the situation and need to acknowledge it.
- The truth I am avoiding is that I gave the person the wrong impression because I was afraid to say what I really thought.
- The truth I am avoiding is that I need to ask for clarification instead of pretending I understand and agree.
Formation Prayer
Father, free me from being governed by fear of people. Give me courage to speak what is true while remaining humble and loving. Amen.
🌱 DAY 270 — DO NOT WEAPONISE THE TRUTH
Scripture — Proverbs 12:18
“There is one whose rash words are like sword thrusts, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.”
Truth can be spoken in a way that brings clarity.
Or it can be used like a weapon.
We can exaggerate.
Use sarcasm.
Attack character.
Bring up unrelated failures.
Use words such as:
“You always…”
“You never…”
“You are just…”
The issue is no longer simply whether what we are saying contains truth.
The question becomes:
“How am I using this truth?”
Wise speech does not remove honesty.
It removes unnecessary injury.
Today’s Practice
Ask:
“How can I say what is true without using the truth to wound?”
Examples to help you understand how you can write your response. Please answer based on your experience.
- I can say, “I felt overlooked when the decision was made without me,” instead of, “You never respect me.”
- I can describe the specific situation without attacking the person’s character.
- I can explain that I disagree without using sarcasm to make the person look foolish.
- I can address what actually happened without bringing up every previous mistake.
- I can remove words like “always” and “never” when they exaggerate the truth.
Formation Prayer
Holy Spirit, put wisdom in my mouth. Help me speak truth clearly without using my words to injure, humiliate, exaggerate, or retaliate. Amen.
🌱 DAY 271 — CHOOSE THE RIGHT TIME AND SETTING
Scripture — Proverbs 15:23
“…a word in season, how good it is!”
A true word can still be spoken at an unwise time.
We may be angry.
The other person may be exhausted.
People may be present who do not need to hear the conversation.
The moment may be too rushed for either person to listen well.
Wisdom considers not only what needs to be said, but when and where it should be said.
Waiting for the right time does not mean avoiding truth.
It means respecting the weight of the conversation enough to give it an appropriate setting.
Today’s Practice
Ask:
“When and where would be a wise time and setting for this truth to be spoken?”
Examples to help you understand how you can write your response. Please answer based on your experience.
- A wise time would be after we have both calmed down rather than trying to talk while emotions are high.
- A wise setting would be privately rather than raising the matter in front of other people.
- A wise time would be when neither of us is rushing and we can actually listen.
- A wise setting would be a conversation rather than sending a long text about something sensitive.
- A wise time would be after I have prayed and can speak without resentment.
Formation Prayer
Holy Spirit, give me wisdom about timing and setting. Help me know when to speak and when to wait. Amen.
🌱 DAY 272 — SAY ENOUGH, THEN STOP
Scripture — Proverbs 10:19
“When words are many, transgression is not lacking, but whoever restrains his lips is prudent.”
More words do not always create more clarity.
Sometimes we keep talking after the truth has already been communicated.
We repeat ourselves.
Add unnecessary details.
Defend every possible misunderstanding.
Introduce unrelated matters.
Or keep talking because the other person has not responded the way we hoped.
Scripture teaches restraint.
Wisdom knows when the necessary truth has been said.
Then it stops.
Today’s Practice
Ask:
“What actually needs to be said, and when have I said enough?”
Examples to help you understand how you can write your response. Please answer based on your experience.
- What needs to be said is that I misunderstood what happened and I want to clarify my part. Once I explain that clearly, I do not need to repeat it several times.
- What needs to be said is that I disagree with one part of the decision; I do not need to explain every thought I have about the entire situation.
- What needs to be said is how the comment affected me; I can leave out unrelated issues from the past.
- What needs to be said is my understanding of what happened; after that, I need to allow the other person to respond.
- What needs to be said is the clarification itself. I do not need to keep adding words because the person remains quiet.
Formation Prayer
Holy Spirit, give me clarity and restraint. Help me say what is necessary and recognise when enough has been said. Amen.
🌱 DAY 273 — SPEAK WITH GRACE AND RELEASE THE RESPONSE
Scripture — Colossians 4:6
“Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt…”
We are responsible for how we communicate.
We are not responsible for controlling how every person receives what we say.
We can speak honestly.
Lovingly.
Clearly.
Wisely.
Graciously.
And the other person may still disagree.
They may need time to think.
They may misunderstand at first.
They may respond defensively.
Or they may receive what we say well.
Speaking truth in love means we take responsibility for our words, our attitude, and our obedience, then release the other person’s response.
We do not have to keep explaining until they agree with us.
Today’s Practice
Ask:
“What is mine to communicate faithfully, and what response must I release?”
Examples to help you understand how you can write your response. Please answer based on your experience.
- What is mine to communicate faithfully is that I experienced the situation differently; I must release whether the person immediately agrees.
- What is mine to communicate faithfully is the clarification I need to give; I cannot control whether the person accepts it immediately.
- What is mine to communicate faithfully is my honest perspective; the other person is responsible for how they respond to it.
- What is mine to communicate faithfully is that the comment affected me; I must release the need for the person to respond exactly as I hope.
- What is mine to communicate faithfully is the truth with grace; after that, I can give the person space to process what was said.
Formation Prayer
Holy Spirit, let my speech be truthful and gracious. Help me communicate faithfully and release to You what I cannot control. Amen.
🌿 END-OF-WEEK PAUSE
Look back over this week.
Where did you need courage to speak honestly?
Where did you recognise that your words needed a clearer godly purpose?
Where were you tempted to use truth as a weapon?
Where did timing or restraint improve the conversation?
Where do you need to stop trying to control how another person receives what you have said?
Remember:
The goal is not simply to become more outspoken.
Nor is it to become so agreeable that truth disappears.
The Holy Spirit is forming us into people who can be:
truthful without becoming harsh,
courageous without becoming aggressive,
clear without becoming excessive,
and gracious without compromising truth.
GOVERNING TRUTH
As Christ is formed in me, I can communicate what is true with love, courage, wisdom, restraint, and grace—without allowing fear to silence me or frustration to weaponise my words.
PERSONAL REFLECTION
Can I remain truthful without leaving love?
CLOSING PRAYER
Father, thank You for truth and for love. Holy Spirit, govern what I say, why I say it, when I say it, and how I say it. Give me courage where fear has silenced me, wisdom where emotion wants to speak too quickly, restraint when enough has been said, and grace in every conversation. Form Christ in me so that truth and love remain together in my words. In Jesus’ name, amen.
