Has Your Heart Stayed Passionate Toward God?
It is possible to keep serving God while the heart that once burned for Him has grown quiet. We can still attend, speak, sing, pray, lead, and function outwardly, yet inwardly become distracted, dry, resistant, cold or distant. The question is not only, “Am I still doing spiritual things?” The deeper question is, “Is my heart still passionate for Christ?”
Spiritual passion calls us back to first love: not performance without affection, activity without surrender, or service without communion, but a heart fully alive to God.
“Nevertheless I have this against you, that you have left your first love. Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the first works…” — Revelation 2:4–5
What Spiritual Passion Means
Spiritual passion is a deep, Spirit-awakened desire for God that moves a person beyond routine, duty, or religious activity into wholehearted love, pursuit, obedience, and service to Him.
It is not excitement alone. It is not emotion by itself. Spiritual passion is when the heart is stirred toward God, the life is surrendered to Him, and daily choices begin to reflect what matters to Him.
Biblical Marks of Spiritual Passion
1. Hunger for God
A passionate believer does not only want what God can do; they want God Himself.
“Whom have I in heaven but You? And there is none upon earth that I desire besides You.” — Psalm 73:25
2. Love that leads to obedience
True spiritual passion is seen in obedience, not just words or feelings.
“If you love Me, keep My commandments.” — John 14:15
3. Zeal governed by truth
Passion must be shaped by the Word and led by the Holy Spirit. Otherwise, it can become emotional, impulsive, self-willed, or flesh-led.
“For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge.” — Romans 10:2
4. A burning desire to please God
Spiritual passion makes a person ask, “Lord, what do You want?” not only, “What do I want?”
“We make it our aim… to be well pleasing to Him.” — 2 Corinthians 5:9
5. Faithfulness even when feelings are not strong
Spiritual passion is not only proven when a person feels inspired. It is also revealed when they keep seeking, obeying, praying, serving, and yielding when it costs them.
“Not lagging in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord.” — Romans 12:11
A simple definition: Spiritual passion is the inner fire of love, hunger, and surrender toward God, produced by the Holy Spirit, governed by truth, and expressed through obedience, worship, service, and daily alignment with Christ.
Passion and Spiritual Passion: What Is the Difference?
Passion is strong desire, energy, interest, or enthusiasm toward something. A person can be passionate about business, family, music, education, justice, ministry, sports, success, or a dream. Passion gives drive. It makes a person care deeply and pursue something with focus.
But passion by itself is not always spiritual. It can be shaped by ambition, pain, pride, fear, competition, personal goals, or the need to prove oneself.
Spiritual passion is passion that has been awakened, purified, governed, and directed by the Holy Spirit. It is not merely strong feeling; it is holy desire. It is a deep hunger for God, love for Christ, obedience to His Word, burden for His will, and willingness to serve His purpose.
- Passion is strong desire. Spiritual passion is strong desire surrendered to God.
- Passion may say, “I want this badly.” Spiritual passion says, “Lord, let what I desire be aligned with You.”
- Passion may push a person to achieve. Spiritual passion moves a person to obey.
- Passion may be driven by self-expression. Spiritual passion is governed by surrender.
- Passion may burn for a goal. Spiritual passion burns for God’s glory.
Why Passion Matters
Passion matters because it gives movement to what a person values. It motivates you. Where there is no passion, people become passive, careless, distracted, or easily discouraged. Passion helps a person press beyond inconvenience, delay, criticism, and weariness.
In the life of a believer, spiritual passion matters because it keeps the heart alive toward God. It helps us seek Him, love Him, obey Him, serve Him, and remain faithful when life becomes difficult.
But passion must be governed. Unsubmitted passion can become striving, control, offence, impatience, pride, or emotional reaction. Spiritual passion must remain under the leadership of the Holy Spirit.
The goal is not to lose passion. The goal is for passion to be purified.
Passion gives energy. Spiritual passion gives holy direction. Passion moves you toward what you want. Spiritual passion moves you toward what God desires.
The Call Back to First Love
Revelation 2:4–5 speaks directly to the danger of a heart growing cold while activity continues. Jesus did not only address what they were doing; He addressed what they had left.
Return using the 3Rs
Remember — recognize where love, hunger, tenderness, and devotion began to decline.
Repent — turn from coldness, distraction, self-rule, pride, compromise, or routine without love.
Return — do again what love for Christ once moved you to do.
Prayerful response: Lord, show me where I have left my first love, and lead me back to wholehearted love, surrender, and obedience to You.
Evidence That Spiritual Passion Is Alive
Spiritual passion is not measured only by loud worship, visible activity, or emotional excitement. It is seen in a heart that remains alive, responsive, surrendered, and obedient to God.
- You desire God Himself, not only what God can do for you. You want His presence, His voice, His ways, and His will. Your relationship with God is not only need-based.
- You are hungry for the Word. You do not treat Scripture as information only, but as truth that searches, corrects, feeds, renews, and governs them.
- You respond to conviction. When the Holy Spirit reveals something in you, you do not keep defending it. You become willing to repent, adjust, and be changed.
- You obey even when it costs them. Your obedience is not dependent on convenience, mood, applause, or agreement from others.
- You care about what grieves God. You become sensitive to sin, compromise, pride, bitterness, dishonour, carnality, and anything that pulls them away from God.
- You keep returning to prayer. Prayer is not only a crisis response. It becomes a place of communion, surrender, strengthening, and alignment.
- You want Christ to be formed in them. You are not satisfied with appearing spiritual; you want your desires, attitudes, responses, speech, and character to reflect Christ.
- You serve from love, not just obligation. You may get tired, but your heart remains connected to the purpose of God.
- You are willing to be governed by the Holy Spirit. You pause before reacting, discern what is influencing you, and choose Spirit-led living over natural reactions.
- You recover quickly when You drift. Spiritual passion does not mean you never struggle. It means you do not stay comfortable in distance, disobedience, or dullness.
Evidence That Spiritual Passion Has Grown Cold
- God becomes an addition, not the centre. You still believe, but God is no longer the main affection, priority, or pursuit.
- Prayer becomes occasional or mechanical. You may still pray, but the heart is no longer engaged. Prayer becomes a duty, not fellowship.
- The Word no longer searches the heart. You hear Scripture but do not allow it to confront, correct, renew, or change them.
- Conviction is resisted. Instead of yielding, you explain, justify, blame, avoid, or become offended when God reveals something.
- Worship loses surrender. You may still sing, attend, or participate, but the heart is no longer deeply yielded.
- Obedience becomes selective. You obey what is convenient, but delay or resist what requires surrender, humility, forgiveness, sacrifice, or change.
- Spiritual things feel burdensome. Prayer, serving, giving, gathering, studying, and obeying begin to feel like pressure rather than privilege.
- The flesh becomes easier to follow. Old attitudes, reactions, offence, pride, fear, lust, comparison, anger, or self-will begin to govern again.
- You lose concern for God’s pleasure. The question shifts from, “Lord, what pleases You?” to “What do I feel like doing?”
- You can function spiritually without being spiritually tender. This is one of the most dangerous signs. You can still serve, speak, lead, sing, teach, or attend while inwardly becoming dry, hard, distracted, or disconnected.
A Simple Way to Discern It
When spiritual passion is alive, the heart says: “Lord, draw me closer. Search me. Lead me. Change me. Use me. Be glorified in me.”
When spiritual passion has grown cold, the heart often says, even silently: “I know enough. I have done enough. I am tired of yielding. I want my own way.”
The evidence of spiritual passion is not noise. It is hunger, surrender, obedience, sensitivity, faithfulness, and a heart that keeps turning toward God.

Heart-Examination Questions
Use these questions slowly and prayerfully. Do not rush to answer. Let the Holy Spirit reveal the true condition of the heart.
- Do I still desire God Himself, or have I become more focused on what I need Him to do for me?
- What currently has the strongest pull on my heart: God’s presence, my emotions, my comfort, my plans, my pain, or people’s approval?
- Am I still sensitive when the Holy Spirit convicts me, or have I become skilled at explaining, justifying, or avoiding what He is showing me?
- Have I been more passionate about my assignment, title, gifting, ministry, or success than I am about Christ Himself?
- Where have I become spiritually casual, dull, distracted, or careless?
- What spiritual practices have become routine without real surrender, affection, or attention?
- What has been competing with my hunger for God?
- Is there any area where I am obeying selectively instead of surrendering fully?
- What did love for Christ once move me to do that I have stopped doing?
- Lord, where has my heart grown cold, and what are You calling me to return to?

Lord Jesus, restore my first love. Awaken holy desire in me again. Purify my passion, govern my heart by Your Spirit, and bring me back to wholehearted love, surrender, obedience, and devotion. Let my life not only continue in spiritual activity, but burn with living affection for You. Amen.

A guided heart-examination for believers who want more than activity – they want a heart alive toward God.
It is possible to still serve, still attend, still speak spiritual language – and yet quietly drift from first love. This session is not about condemnation. It is an invitation to notice the condition of the heart and return to holy fire.
1. Session Aim
By the end of this small group, each person should be able to identify what spiritual passion is, discern whether their heart is alive or cooling, and name one practical step of return to God.
2. Key Scriptures
