Governing Truth

The ordinary responsibility before you may be one of the places where the life of Christ is meant to become visible today.

Governing Question

How is Christ being expressed through the way I handle what is already before me?

OPENING — FORMATION DOES NOT STOP WHEN PRAYER ENDS

3–4 minutes

Leader:

We have been paying attention to something very important:

As we remain in Christ, His life should become increasingly visible—not only in prayer, worship, Bible reading, and other spiritual practices, but also in the ordinary responsibilities He has already entrusted to us.

Today, we are going one step deeper.

We are not going to look at ten things that need improvement.

We are going to allow the Holy Spirit to put His finger on one area.

One responsibility.

One repeated pattern.

One place where we can honestly say:

“Christ lives in me, but His faithfulness is not yet being consistently expressed through me here.”

Maybe you pray faithfully but repeatedly arrive late.

Maybe you love God but keep postponing something you promised to complete.

Maybe you worship deeply but handle money carelessly.

Maybe you are dependable at church but neglect responsibilities at home.

Maybe people continually have to remind you to do what you already agreed to do.

Maybe you begin things enthusiastically but seldom finish them.

Today is not about condemnation.

And it is not productivity training.

We are not here merely to become more organised, disciplined, efficient, or impressive.

We are asking:

Where does the Holy Spirit want the life and character of Jesus to become more visible in the way I handle what God has already placed before me?

Our goal remains the same:

Christ formed in us.
Christ governing us.
Christ expressed through us.

STEP 1 — IDENTIFY WHERE I AM NOW

Before looking at what needs to change, identify one specific responsibility.

Do not write:

  • “I need to be more responsible.”
  • “I need to improve.”
  • “I need to be more faithful.”

Those answers are too general.

Ask yourself:

What is one ordinary responsibility I already have that I am not handling as faithfully as I know I should?

Possible areas:

  • arriving on time;
  • keeping appointments;
  • completing work by the agreed date;
  • returning calls or messages;
  • paying bills on time;
  • managing money responsibly;
  • preparing properly for an assignment;
  • maintaining your home;
  • keeping promises;
  • caring for someone entrusted to you;
  • completing ministry responsibilities;
  • following through after saying, “I will do it”;
  • managing your work honestly;
  • taking care of something you have been given;
  • being faithful with small responsibilities when no one is watching.

Write:

The one area I am focusing on today is:

STEP 2 — RECOGNISE MY PRESENT PATTERN

Now look at what actually happens in that area.

Not what you intended to do.

Not what you wish you did.

Not what you normally tell yourself.

Ask:

What do I repeatedly do—or fail to do—in this area?

You may recognise:

  • I delay.
  • I avoid starting.
  • I begin but do not finish.
  • I forget because I do not write things down.
  • I make excuses.
  • I underestimate how much time things require.
  • I wait until the last minute.
  • I arrive late repeatedly.
  • I spend first and think afterward.
  • I promise too quickly.
  • I depend on people to keep reminding me.
  • I handle things carelessly.
  • I neglect people because I am distracted.
  • I avoid difficult conversations.
  • I say, “I will do it,” but do not follow through.
  • I do only what people can see.
  • I handle small things casually because they do not seem important.

Write:

My present pattern is:

Then ask one more question:

What excuse do I normally give myself for continuing this pattern?

For example:

“I was busy.”

“I forgot.”

“I am just not good with time.”

“That is how I have always been.”

“I work better under pressure.”

“I will deal with it later.”

“It is only a small thing.”

“Someone else will remind me.”

“I did not feel like doing it.”

Write:

The excuse I most often use is:

Teaching

Sometimes what we call our personality is actually a pattern God wants to transform.

Sometimes what we call being “busy” is poor stewardship.

Sometimes what we call forgetfulness is a failure to establish a responsible system.

Sometimes what we call “just being me” is an area where Christ still wants greater expression.

So now we bring the pattern under the authority of the Word.

STEP 3 — LET SCRIPTURE EXAMINE THE AREA

Scripture 1 — Colossians 3:17

“And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus…”

Notice the word:

Whatever.

This brings ordinary life under the Lordship of Christ.

The question is no longer merely:

“Did I complete the task?”

The deeper question becomes:

“Can the way I am handling this responsibility represent Jesus?”

Reflect:

If I am doing this in the name of Jesus, what should change about the way I handle it?

Scripture 2 — Colossians 3:23–24

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord…”

People may not notice.

People may not thank you.

Nobody may applaud you.

But Scripture changes who we understand ourselves to be serving.

Ask:

If I truly saw this responsibility as something I was handling before Christ, rather than merely for people, what would I do differently?

Scripture 3 — Luke 16:10

“Whoever can be trusted with very little can also be trusted with much…”

We often want God to entrust us with greater things.

But Jesus draws attention to how we handle little things.

The small assignment.

The promise nobody followed up on.

The bill.

The phone call.

The preparation.

The appointment.

The person who needs care.

The responsibility that does not feel important.

Reflect:

Have I been treating something casually because I considered it small?

What would faithfulness in this “small thing” look like?

Scripture 4 — 1 Corinthians 4:2

“Now it is required that those who have been given a trust must prove faithful.”

Notice what Scripture emphasises:

faithfulness.

Not impressiveness.

Not visibility.

Not gifting.

Faithfulness.

Ask:

What has been entrusted to me in this area?

Am I handling it faithfully?

Yes / Sometimes / No

Leader:

Do not rush past your answer.

This is not about shame.

This is about allowing truth to locate us.

STEP 4 — CHOOSE THE TRUTH I WILL STAND ON

Of the Scriptures we have read, which one speaks most directly to the area you identified?

Write it down.

My Scripture:

Now complete these two sentences:

This Scripture is teaching me to believe that:

This Scripture is calling me to practise:

Example

Area: Repeated lateness.

Scripture: Colossians 3:23.

What I must believe:
My ordinary commitments matter because I ultimately serve Christ.

What I must practise:
Preparing earlier and leaving home at a time that allows me to honour the commitment I made.

Another example:

Area: Frequently failing to follow through.

Scripture: 1 Corinthians 4:2.

What I must believe:
God values faithfulness with what He has entrusted to me.

What I must practise:
Recording commitments and completing them by the agreed date instead of relying on memory and good intentions.

STEP 5 — IDENTIFY WHAT MUST ACTUALLY CHANGE

Now we move beyond:

“I need to do better.”

That sentence does not tell you what must change.

Ask instead:

What exactly must stop, change, or be established?

Is it:

  • my habit of waiting until the last minute?
  • saying yes before checking whether I can fulfil the commitment?
  • failing to plan?
  • unnecessary spending?
  • ignoring reminders?
  • depending upon others to chase me?
  • leaving tasks unfinished?
  • avoiding uncomfortable responsibilities?
  • treating small responsibilities as unimportant?
  • my attitude of “someone else will handle it”?
  • making excuses instead of taking responsibility?

Write:

The pattern that must change is:

Then complete:

Instead of ____________________, I need to begin ____________________.

STEP 6 — WHAT WOULD CHRISTLIKENESS LOOK LIKE HERE?

Now we come to the deeper formation question.

Do not ask only:

“How can I become better at this?”

Ask:

If Christ’s faithfulness, diligence, integrity, and care were increasingly visible in this area of my life, what would I begin doing differently?

Think practically.

Would Christ’s faithfulness mean:

I keep my word?

I complete what I begin?

I prepare properly?

I respect other people’s time?

I take better care of what has been entrusted to me?

I stop requiring other people to carry responsibilities that belong to me?

I handle money with greater wisdom?

I pay attention to the needs of people around me?

I do the small thing well even when nobody sees?

Write:

If Christ were increasingly visible in this area, I would:

Leader Transition

This is where the exercise becomes formation rather than merely self-evaluation.

We are not creating an improved version of ourselves.

We are asking the Holy Spirit to form Christ’s response in us.

STEP 7 — MOVE FROM CONVICTION TO SPIRIT-LED OBEDIENCE

Conviction that never becomes obedience does not produce the change God is calling for.

James tells us:

“Be doers of the word, and not hearers only.”

Now choose one action.

Not five.

One.

And make it specific enough that you will know whether you actually did it.

Instead of:

“I will become more punctual.”

Write:

“For every appointment this week, I will prepare the night before and aim to arrive ten minutes early.”

Instead of:

“I will manage money better.”

Write:

“Before spending money that is not already budgeted, I will pause and record the expense first.”

Instead of:

“I will follow through better.”

Write:

“When I make a commitment, I will immediately record the task and deadline, and I will review my list every morning.”

Instead of:

“I will care for people more.”

Write:

“I will call the person I have been postponing contacting before 6 p.m. today.”

My Immediate Action

Beginning today, I will:

When?

How will I know I have done it?

IMPORTANT — THIS IS NOT SELF-IMPROVEMENT

Now hear this carefully.

You could leave this exercise with a new planner, a new reminder system, a new budget, or a new schedule and still miss the spiritual purpose.

Those tools may help.

But the tool is not the source of transformation.

Christ is our life.

The Holy Spirit is our Helper.

We remain dependent upon Him.

We receive truth.

We yield our will.

Then we respond.

So when the old pattern rises again, our response becomes:

“Holy Spirit, I recognise the old pattern. I yield this moment to You. Help me respond according to the truth I have received.”

Then we obey.

That is formation through Spirit-led obedience.

STEP 8 — ESTABLISH THE NEW RESPONSE

One changed response does not necessarily mean the pattern has been transformed.

Formation involves repetition.

The old response may have been practised for years.

So when the same situation appears again, you may feel the pull to:

delay,

avoid,

make the excuse,

overspend,

arrive late,

neglect,

leave it unfinished,

or wait for someone else to remind you.

That moment is important.

It is another opportunity to yield.

You recognise the old response.

You remember the truth.

You yield to the Holy Spirit.

You obey.

And then you do it again the next time.

And the next time.

Not to earn God’s love.

Not to prove you are spiritual.

Not merely through human willpower.

But because the Holy Spirit is establishing a different response in you.

Formation Progression

I recognise the pattern.

↓

I receive God’s truth.

↓

I yield to the Holy Spirit.

↓

I choose the Christlike response.

↓

I practise obedience.

↓

I repeat that surrendered response.

↓

Christ’s character becomes increasingly established and visible in the way I live.

That is why formation is more than doing something differently once.

It is allowing truth to become increasingly established until the changed response becomes part of your way of life.

Reflection

When the old pattern appears again, what will I need to remember?

What will I say to the Holy Spirit in that moment?

A simple response may be:

“Holy Spirit, I yield this moment to You. Help me respond according to Your truth.”

STEP 9 — PERSONAL SURRENDER

Look again at the area you wrote at the beginning.

Do not look at somebody else’s area.

Stay with yours.

Now quietly bring that responsibility before Jesus.

You may want to place your hand over what you have written.

Ask yourself one final question:

How is Christ being expressed through the way I handle what is already before me?

And where His life is not yet being consistently expressed, do not hide it.

Bring it to Him.

Personal Surrender

Complete this prayer in your own words:

“Lord Jesus, I surrender __________________________ to You.”

“I recognise that I have been __________________________.”

“Your Word is showing me __________________________.”

“Holy Spirit, form in me Christ’s __________________________.”

“Beginning today, I will respond by __________________________.”

Pause.

Write your answer.

CLOSING PRAYER

Father, thank You that You are not only concerned with what happens in our prayer closet. You desire the life of Jesus to become visible through the way we live when we leave it.

Thank You for showing us the ordinary places where You are still forming us.

We surrender the responsibility we have identified today.

Where we have delayed, teach us faithfulness.

Where we have been careless, form diligence.

Where we have broken commitments, form integrity.

Where we have neglected people, form the care and compassion of Christ.

Where we have made excuses, give us humility to take responsibility.

Where old habits have governed us, teach us to recognise them, receive Your truth, yield to Your Spirit, and obey.

Holy Spirit, we acknowledge that we cannot form Christ in ourselves.

Teach us to abide in Christ, believe His Word, depend upon Your power, and respond when You lead.

And as we repeatedly yield to You, establish new responses within us until the faithfulness, diligence, integrity, humility, and care of Jesus become increasingly visible in the ordinary way we live.

May our homes reveal Christ.

May our work reveal Christ.

May our commitments reveal Christ.

May our stewardship reveal Christ.

May the small things reveal Christ.

Let Jesus be seen in what we do when no one applauds, no one reminds us, and no one is watching.

In Jesus’ name,

Amen.

TAKEAWAY

The ordinary responsibility before you may be one of the places where the life of Christ is meant to become visible today.

So this week, do not merely ask:

“Did I get it done?”

Ask:

“Did the way I handled it reveal Christ?”

SIMPLE WEEKLY PRACTICE

For the one responsibility you identified:

NOTICE — What pattern is trying to return?

REMEMBER — What does God’s Word say?

YIELD — Holy Spirit, govern my response.

RESPOND — Do the specific thing truth requires.

REPEAT — Continue until the new response becomes increasingly established.

Final Formation Truth

We are not practising better behaviour so that we can become acceptable to God. We are abiding in Christ, receiving His truth, yielding to His Spirit, and practising obedience so that the Christ who already lives within us may become increasingly visible through the way we live.
