Key Scriptures: 1 Samuel 16:7; 1 Thessalonians 5:23; Proverbs 4:23; 1 Corinthians 6:17; John 15:4–5; James 4:4
Introduction
Hear me well, this is not just another meeting, and this is not just another word. Heaven is calling for a shift, and the Spirit of God is moving through this house with divine urgency. We are not in a season of casual attendance; we are in a season of consecration. God is not simply rearranging our schedules; He is realigning the very posture of our hearts. He is preparing vessels—not for ordinary service—but for a Kingdom shift that will demand prayer, purity, power, and precision. (4Ps)
The Lord is searching, not for the most gifted, the most visible, or the most polished, but for those whose hearts are wholly His. He is looking for men and women who are not merely impressive in appearance but aligned in the depths of their spirit.
1 Samuel 16:7 – ‘…man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.’
In the Kingdom, your heart posture outweighs your outward performance. You can appear ready before people, but still stand rejected before a Holy God if your heart is misaligned. Remember what Jesus said to Christians in Matthew 7:21: “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter into the realm of heaven’s kingdom. It is only those who persist in doing the will of my heavenly Father. This is a moment, saints of God, to drop all pretense, to strip away every layer of performance, and to let the Spirit of God deal with what is beneath the surface.” (2 P’s)
1. Spirit, Soul, and Body – Understanding the Difference
1 Thessalonians 5:23 says: Now, may the God of peace and harmony set you apart, making you completely holy. And may your entire being—spirit, soul, and body—be kept completely flawless in the appearing of our Lord Jesus, the Anointed One. This shows that we are spirit, soul, and body:
- Spirit/heart – The core of our being, the part that connects directly to God.
- Soul – Our mind, will, and emotions.
- Body – The earthly vessel that carries out the desires of the spirit or soul.
Whatever governs the heart will eventually govern the mind, influence the will, and steer the emotions.

The Control Tower
Proverbs 4:23 – Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life.
Think of your heart/spirit as the control tower of an airport. From that tower, instructions are sent to every pilot—when to take off, when to land, how to adjust course. If the control tower is receiving clear and accurate signals, the planes follow the right paths, land safely, and avoid collisions. But if the signals are jammed or corrupted—whether by bad weather, interference, or a hostile takeover—the pilots receive wrong instructions. Planes miss their routes, chaos erupts, and lives are put at risk.
Your heart/spirit is the control tower of your life. From there, instructions are sent to your soul—your mind, will, and emotions. If the tower receives clear signals from God through His Word and Spirit, you stay on course. But if the signals are jammed or corrupted by wrong influences, your soul receives distorted directions, leading to confusion, rebellion, or instability.
Example: If bitterness lives in the heart, your mind will replay offenses, you will resist reconciliation, and your emotions lean toward anger. If the love of God fills your heart, your mind seeks peace, your will chooses forgiveness, and your emotions release healing.
The Root System
Jeremiah 17:7–8 – Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose confidence is in Him. He will be like a tree planted by the water… its leaves are always green… and never fails to bear fruit.
Your heart/spirit is like the root system of a tree. When your roots draw in from God’s truth and Spirit, you produce the fruit of righteousness. But if your roots tap into contaminated soil—worldly thinking, sinful patterns, ungodly influences—your soul will show it in withered emotions, broken decisions, and stunted growth.
The Water Tank
Matthew 12:34b – …For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.
Your heart/spirit is like a central water tank. If the tank is full of pure, clean water, every tap in the house—your thoughts, words, actions—flows with life. But if the tank is contaminated, everything that comes out will carry the same contamination. What fills the heart will always overflow into the soul.
2. The Principle of Spiritual Union
1 Corinthians 6:17 – ‘But the one who is united and joined to the Lord is one spirit with Him.’
Union with the Lord means His Spirit becomes the life-force of your spirit. This is living in a shared nature, shared desires, and shared purpose with God.
Union with Christ produces:
– Sensitivity to His voice (John 10:27)
– Power to resist sin (Galatians 5:16)
– Fruit of the Spirit flowing naturally (Galatians 5:22–23)
– Alignment with His will in every decision (John 15:4–5)
3. The Danger of Wrong Spiritual Union
Just as right union produces life, wrong union produces defilement.
The wrong union can come through relationships, alliances, or ideologies that oppose God’s truth.
These wrong connections create spiritual openings for corruption to flow into your heart.
James 4:4 warns, ‘…friendship with the world is enmity with God…’
1 Kings 11:1–4 informs us that Solomon’s heart was turned away by foreign wives aligned with idols.
When you are in the wrong union, you:
– Begin to adopt ungodly thought patterns
– Lose spiritual sensitivity
– Resist godly correction
– Become comfortable with compromise
4. Why It’s Dangerous in a Ministry Team
In a team setting, this kind of spiritual misalignment can:
- 🚨 WARNING: Pollute decision-making – because personal agendas, insecurity or emotional biases masquerade as “the Lord’s leading,” or “The Lord said”
Example:
Ananias and Sapphira (Acts 5:1–11)
In Acts 5, Ananias and Sapphira sold a piece of property and brought part of the proceeds to the apostles while claiming they had given the full amount. On the outside, their act looked extremely generous—an image of deep spirituality and sacrifice. But their real motive was to appear more committed and holy than they truly were, while still holding back part for themselves.
Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, confronted them:
“Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and to keep back part of the price of the land for yourself? … You have not lied to men but to God.” (Acts 5:3–4 NKJV)
The result was immediate and sobering—both Ananias and Sapphira fell dead. This wasn’t just about the money; it was about the hypocrisy and deception of putting on a spiritual façade to impress others and cover up disobedience.
Lesson for Ministry Teams:
When a leader’s decisions are polluted, they put up a false image to appear spiritual:
- It can deceive the team – Others may assume decisions or contributions are Spirit-led when they are not.
- It quenches the Spirit – The flow of God’s direction is hindered because authenticity is replaced by performance.
- It invites judgment – God takes hypocrisy in His house seriously, especially when it misrepresents Him to others.
- 🚨 WARNING: Weaken Unity – Unity is first spiritual before it is relational. True unity is only possible when all are in genuine union with the Holy Spirit, drawing from the same source of truth and purity. When the source of influence is another spirit—whether deception, pride, or self-interest—it contaminates the flow and weakens the bond.
Example: Imagine a ministry team working toward the same goal, but one member is intentionally lying to cover their tracks. Even if the others are not fully aware, something shifts—trust erodes, discernment picks up the inconsistency, and the spiritual fabric of unity begins to tear. What was once an atmosphere of openness becomes guarded, because unity cannot thrive where truth is compromised.
- 🚨 WARNING: Derail Kingdom focus – when counterfeit influence subtly shifts the mission towards self-promotion, control, compromise or distraction through programmes not initiated by the Holy Spirit.
Example – A “Good Idea” That Pulls the Ministry Off Course
- A ministry leader attends a conference or is told about a programme where they can gain significant recognition and credit. Excited, they return to the team with a proposal. On the surface, it sounds like an opportunity for outreach. But the driving motive is not Spirit-led—it’s rooted in the leader’s desire for recognition. There’s no prayerful seeking of God’s direction, no prophetic confirmation, and no alignment with the ministry’s current God-given focus.
- The team members can get swept up in the enthusiasm, pouring time, money, and energy into planning the programme. But in the process, existing Spirit-led assignments get sidelined. The programme becomes the primary focus, while the original mission loses momentum.
- In the end, the programme may look good, but it bears little lasting fruit because it was born out of human ambition, not the Holy Spirit. The Kingdom’s true priorities are compromised, and the ministry is left tired, drained, and off course.

6. Self-Check: Guarding Your Heart & Spiritual Union
- Heart Examination – 1 Samuel 16:7 ❤️🔍
– What dominates my thoughts when I am alone?
– Do I value God’s approval over people’s approval?
– Am I easily offended or slow to forgive?
– Is my heart teachable, or do I resist correction?
- Spiritual Union 🤝🔥
– Who or what influences my decisions more—God’s Word or other voices?
– Do my closest relationships push me toward God or pull me away from Him?
– Am I more comfortable with God’s truth or with compromise?
– When God speaks, do I obey quickly or delay?
- Wrong Union Warning Signs: 🚨 WARNING
– A pattern of compromise that seems ‘small’ but keeps growing.
– Feeling spiritually dull or disconnected during prayer and worship.
– Resistance to spiritual authority or instruction.
– Agreement with people or systems that oppose biblical truth.
7. Guarding and Maintaining Pure Union
Personal Action Steps
Step 1 – Recognise or Identify: Write down any relationship, habit, or influence that is competing with your union with God.
Step 2 – Renounce: Verbally reject and break agreement with anything not of God.
Step 3 – Replace: Fill the gap with God’s Word, prayer, and godly counsel.
Step 4 – Remain: Stay in daily fellowship with the Lord (John 15:4–5).
8. Call to Shammah
Shammah, God is not looking for the most prominent voice or the most polished gift—He is looking for the purest heart in union with Him. We must be willing to reject wrong unions, whether they are emotional attachments, hidden agreements, or spiritual influences, so that we remain one spirit with the Lord. When the heart is pure, the soul will be strong, the body will walk in obedience, and the ministry will flow in alignment, power, and fruitfulness.
Closing Prayer
Lord, search my heart and reveal any union or attachment that is not from You. I renounce every wrong connection and break agreement with every influence that defiles my spirit. I commit my heart fully to You. Unite my heart to fear Your name and to walk in Your truth. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
